Imaginary Friend - Pt 0

Bright, unfiltered sunlight flooded the room, warming Diane's skin to nearly unbearable levels. The bed upon which she lay was cool, covered in white sheets, bleached so bright they were blinding as the sun's rays reflected from them. She tried to close her eyes and sink into the bed, but the light was too bright and the bed rejected her. The mattress became stiff, solid, and unyielding to her pressing shoulders. The sun jumped closer and all she could see was the red skin behind her eyelids. All she could feel was her burning flesh, her body was on fire. She screamed as a solar flare erupted, lashing her stomach, clinging to her belly.

"Call the doctor! Her water has broken!"

"Something's wrong, she's bleeding!"

"Get her husband out of here, now!"

Another solar flare flew down, doubling the strand of lit fire grasping her stomach. Off in the distance, Diane could hear voices, but she could not make out their words. Her screams drowned them out as she fought to escape the sun.

With every breath she struggled to intake, the sun's grip on her body increased. Her legs were burned and her belly branded when she gave up. She opened her eyes and let the light consume her.

"Doctor!" A nurse screamed as Diane's monitor flat-lined. The baby had been born breech and was not breathing. The loss of the child would be heart breaking for the father, but the loss of both his wife and daughter?

Just as the doctor had given up hope and declared time of death for Diane, the newborn took her first solo breath and wailed.
